9. Course description:
                    
The aim of the course is to develop the English language and study skills of students who have been identified as having a low level of English attainment, so that by the end of the course, they can progress to the University Study Skills in English 2 course and actively participate in mainstream university courses to an international standard.

Students are to successfully demonstrate the following English language and study skills:
• Understanding and answering questions
• Knowledge and use of general vocabulary and rubrics
• Skimming reading texts
• Scanning reading texts
• Skimming listening texts
• Scanning listening texts
• Writing sentences
• Elementary sentence writing grammar
• Writing paragraphs
• Elementary paragraph writing grammar
• Basic presentations

12. Learning and teaching approaches:

 

Whilst lecturing is the recognised form of instruction for most disciplines, teachers are encouraged to use their imagination when deciding approaches and methods of instruction. An eclectic approach, integrating multiple methods is required to facilitate the appropriate learning environment for individual students as learning a language involves doing rather than talking about doing.

Students are to successfully demonstrate that they can understand and answer questions. Students will demonstrate that they have discipline, and are honest and responsible. 

English language and study skills development through discussions, group work, exercises from course books, reading and writing of texts and presentations by the lecturers and students.  Assignments are to be handed in on time during the course.  Students are to resist plagiarism throughout the course.  Students are to regularly attend class at specified times and adhere to agreed classroom etiquette over the period of instruction.
