| Telephone watches in examination fiasco |

Since the much publicised use of a small telephone watch to cheat in a recent state examination, could we be seeing students spending a disproportionate amount of time and money trying to circumvent the examination process in order to satisfy society’s need for success? It is vital that students appreciate... ... the importance of honesty and integrity and that cheating at anything in life shows a lack of respect for oneself as well as everyone else in society. A culture of dishonesty and deceit amongst students will lead to problems in later life and it is the responsibility of parents and teachers to put forward the correct principles and guidelines for children to follow. Newspaper reports have indicated that the parents of the student caught cheating paid a six figure sum to a syndicate to supply the answers to the examination questions. If the parents are promoting this sort of behaviour, then my personal opinion is that the student is not wholly to blame. What sort of example are the parents setting for their child?
